The category of “superfoods” has become an increasingly popular concept in recent years. In the simple terms, a superfood may refer to any minimally processed food that is also rich in nutrients, and can help us live longer, healthier lives.
Filling your plate with these foods while maintaining an active lifestyle may increase your longevity, based on reporting from Prevention.com, the National Council on Aging, and AARP:
- Cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, turnips, and cabbage.
- Berries, a great treat by themselves or in a cup of Greek yogurt
- Eggs: while cholesterol may be a concern for some seniors, research shows that cholesterol from eggs does not affect overall blood cholesterol like saturated fats do, so unless instructed otherwise by your doctor, it’s safe to have several eggs each week
- Nuts and seeds
- Avocados (guacamole, anyone?)
- Salmon
- Sweet potatoes
Regardless of your age, incorporating quality ingredients into your diet is one of the best ways to maintain overall health. That’s why our dining team works hard to create menus that are nutritionally dense, featuring lots of fresh, local ingredients, and of course, lots of flavor!
